Warm and dry in high country weather

Winter snow and high seasonal winds were amongst the challenges facing Stan and Wendy when they built a bed-and-breakfast close to the main divide.

Their 55 acres of land footing Lake Oberon was a beautiful country setting, but they knew the house they built would have to be strong and well insulated.

“Stan is a steel man, so we selected a Paal kit home because of its high-tensile galvanised steel framing,” Wendy said.

Local regulations required that the ceiling insulation be thicker than normal to combat the winter cold. Closer roof trusses were required to cope with the snow load.

In its first winter, the new house easily withstood the strong gales, which are common in Oberon at that time. It also coped with heavy falls of snow, which drifted to a metre deep at the front gate.

“We heard no creaks or groans which might indicate a frame under stress.

“As well, the house is wonderfully warm and we hardly have to put the heating on. It is very well designed,” Wendy said.
