Paal has done something different, supplying a kit to lock-up stage for a new health centre, constructed in the rural township of Wudinna on the Eyre Peninsula in South Australia.

The 757 square metre centre (Overall frontage 30.6m x 28.95m), with consulting rooms for about 10 medical and health professionals, is based loosely on Paal’s Castlereagh home design, extended to be as deep as it’s wide.

“It’s been fantastic. We gave the brief to Paal and they came back to us with a design, which has worked out very well,” said Wudinna council chairman Tim Scholz.

The new health facility will serve about 1400 people within a 50 kilometre radius of Wudinna, providing sufficient professional accommodation capacity for the next 30 years.

Paal Kit Homes was brought into the project in order to keep our costs down. An architect-designed building couldn’t have been completed within our budget,”

Mr Scholz said.

“Government typically quotes a 30 per cent loading on buildings constructed in up-country locations, but we managed to erect our new centre for about a 5 per cent loading, which is a substantial saving.”

Paal designed the steel-framed building to lock-up stage and delivered the building kit in two truck and trailer loads.

South Australian federal senator Annette Hurley, who cut the tape to open the centre.

Replacing a doctors’ surgery and a community services building at the adjoining Wudinna Hospital, the new health centre was project-managed by Klint Stott of Port Lincoln and site-managed by Peter Boylan.

“Paal bent over backwards to help us out. They accommodated the changes we were forced to make to the initial design to comply with South Australia’s tough commercial building standards,” Mr Scholz said.

“The building is looking really good. It’s been nicknamed the Taj Mahal by some local people, because it stands out in the landscape and is big enough to serve our community needs for many years to come.

“I would definitely recommend Paal. Their kits are a great opportunity for country councils like ours who are looking to build cost-effective infrastructure,” he said.

A true owner-building experience

A beautiful result achieved, set among landscaped gardens.

Dorothy and Henri Godsk built their own Paal home in the NSW Southern Highlands, achieving a beautiful result set among magnificent landscaped gardens.

“We first looked around and got lots of quotes. A friend had already built with Paal, so we spoke to Michael Christie and he was so helpful and friendly. Paal seemed to take away all our problems,” Dorothy recalled.

The couple found that they were easily able to amend Paal’s standard designs. They used the frontage of the Elizabeth and melded it onto another design, reducing the number of bedrooms from four to three.

“One of the good things about the kit was that we were free to choose our inclusions in the package. For example, we wanted our own style of bathroom.

“Henri supervised the building process and I was the labourer! He’s a boiler maker by trade, so knew what to do. The house came together very well, without problems,” she said.

The couple acknowledged the ongoing work of building a home only at weekends, but said it was a labour of love, thanks to Paal.

“The service was exceptional, the product excellent. We also found the price to be very good – and saved money by building ourselves,” Dorothy said.

“Even after you’ve paid for everything, Paal still gives you professional assistance all the way. We were impressed. Our satisfaction in dealing with Paal just kept coming – unlike other organisations that we deal with from time to time.

“We found Paal helpful in every possible way, from the beginning to the end of our project. A thousand thanks for making it so good for us at a busy and hectic time of our life.”
